Tilbury is a town in the borough of Thurrock, Essex. Part of the Port of London, it boasts a 16^th century fort and ancient cross-river ferry. Due to its location, the area has been populated since Roman times.

The Tilbury-Gravesend Ferry has operated from as early as 1571. Gravesend and Northfleet, both on the south shore of the River Thames, have long been vitally important shipping towns; however it wasn’t until the Tilbury Docks were constructed in 1886 that the area became a proper settlement.
